Four days in Lisbon, 15 to 18 October, two people, €1,640 all in. Flights and both hotels are booked, the two dry days go to Sintra and Belém, and the day the forecast marks wet goes to Alfama, where the good parts are under a roof. One booking is still open: the Pena Palace slot, which sells out for Saturdays about a week ahead.

Why October, and why these four days
Mid-October is the last week Lisbon behaves like summer without the summer crowd: 22 degrees at noon, sea still warm enough for Cascais, and the tram 28 queue at Martim Moniz back under ten minutes before nine in the morning. The two hotels sit on either side of the plan on purpose. Two nights in Baixa put the castle and the tram on foot; the last night near Belém turns Sunday morning into a walk instead of a taxi.
Every stop on one map
Nine places, four days, one tag per day. The pattern is deliberate: each day stays inside one neighbourhood, and the only long trip, Sintra, is a single train each way. Nothing on this map needs a taxi except the ride to the airport on Sunday evening.

Day by day
The order is set by the weather and the queues, not by importance. Belém goes last because it is on the way to the airport, and Sintra goes on Saturday because the Pena slot we want only exists on the weekend timetable.

The two days worth the alarm clock
Sintra and Belém are the only stops with a ticketed slot, and both punish a late start. Pena Palace runs timed entries and the palace interior holds a queue even off season; the 10:00 slot is the one that lets us leave the hill before the coach parties arrive. Belém is simpler: the tower opens at 10:00, the pastry queue is shortest at 09:00, so we do it in that order and eat first.
Where the money goes
Flights and hotels are two-thirds of the budget and both are already paid, so what is left to spend on the ground is €528 for four days. That is generous for Lisbon: dinner for two at Time Out Market is under €40, the day pass for trams and metro is €6.80, and the Pena and Belém tickets together are €62.

Where the plan changed
The first draft did Sintra and Belém on the same day. The forecast broke that, and the version above came out of one exchange.
Can we do Sintra in the morning and Belém in the afternoon on Saturday, and keep Sunday free?
Only on paper. Pena to Belém is 55 minutes by train and tram each way, and Saturday is the one dry day with Friday at 70% rain. Give Saturday to Sintra alone, move Belém to Sunday morning on the way to the airport, and send Friday to Alfama, where the castle and the fado houses are covered.
Then Friday is the tram day. Booking the Baixa hotel for two nights.
Practical notes
Swap the castle for the Museu do Fado and the Sé, both under a roof and both in Alfama. The tram runs in the rain; the miradouro sunset does not, so dinner moves earlier.
Metro red line to Alameda, change to the green line to Baixa-Chiado, about 35 minutes for €1.80 each plus the €0.50 card. A taxi is €20 and no faster at 11:00.
Shoes with grip: the calçada pavements are polished stone and lethal when wet. One light rain jacket, no umbrella, the wind on the miradouros turns them inside out.
Before we fly
- Book the Pena Palace 10:00 Saturday slot, palace and park, before 9 October.
- Reserve the fado house for Friday at 20:30; the good rooms take bookings, the tourist ones take walk-ins.
- Download the offline map of Lisbon and Sintra; the palace hill has no signal.
- Check the forecast again on Tuesday 13 and swap Friday and Sunday if the rain moves.
